The sedimentary rocks that outcrop at Métis-sur-Mer are Lower Ordovician and belong to the Humber zone of the Appalachian orogen. The NATMAP Appalachian project has shown that these marine units deposited in deep water are good source rocks for hydrocarbons, thus providing interesting data for hydrocarbon exploration in eastern Quebec.
