Coghlan Lake is situated on the Yukon Plateau of south-central Yukon Territory. The plateau is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that may have coal and oil an gas potential. The light blue areas in the lake result from absorbtion of part of the visible light spectrum by fine carbonate mud, a precipitate common in cold, shallow, placid lakes of the region.
