Mineral Deposits of Canada
Photo library of GSC ore collections

The objectives of the Photo Library of Canadian Ores are: to change the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) ore collection repository from mass to information through the development of a web-enabled photo library of representative ore deposits in Canada.

The information for each deposit will consist of:

  • Index or location map
  • Regional and detailed geological map of the surface
  • Representative geological cross-section(s)
  • Representative photographs of rock samples of ore and host rocks
  • Full description of all samples displayed
  • Genetic model(s)

Background

The Geological Survey of Canada has the most extensive sample collection from Canada's mineral deposits that extends back to Sir William Logan who collected some of the first examples of Sudbury Ni-Cu ore in the late 1800's. Since then, Geological Survey of Canada bedrock geologists, metallogenists and mineral deposit researchers have gathered extensive sample collections from most of Canada's major mining regions. In some cases, this includes representative sample suites from economically and genetically important deposit types worldwide.
